Anxiety about intimate appearance 'down-there' has reached epidemic proportions. If the appearances of faces in magazines and TV were treated the same as images of vulvas in pornography and health magazines, everyone would have exactly the same one. This just isn't the case, every face is different and no two vulvas are the same.
In 2006, a British artist called Jamie McCartney decided to challenge the notion that we all look the same and created a work of art that contained the casts of 400 vulvas. This 8m long work of art comprises casts of women's vulvas from aged 18 to 71, before giving birth and after and all races. The variation is amazing, and all are perfect. He called it the Great Wall of Vagina which, as well as its unique content was a play on the term Great Wall of China - it attracted lots of international attention. We all know however, that the images are not of Vagina's, but of Vulvas.
The work of art has been re-named The Great Wall of Vulva and you can learn much more about it's fascinating creation here.
Jamie says that:
"Knowledge is power, freedom from genital anxiety is the goal"
When he was making the casts, he was shocked and upset to discover that many women were not happy with how their genitals looked. They felt that their labia were too big, or too small, or uneven......
In truth, all looked different and all are perfect and this amazing work of art is a testament to this.
